Custom web applications: from idea to deployment on Azure

Not everything is solved with a workflow. Sometimes a company needs its own application, with its database, its users and its business logic.

Here are three I built this year at DPI Estrategia: two written in code end to end, on PostgreSQL and Azure, and one with Power Apps. In the first two you can play with a small simulation of what they do.

    2. The algorithm allocates the hours

    each person’s hour limit

A grant planner that allocates the hours by itself

For a company that plans and manages innovation grants, I built a complete application from scratch, with a React and TypeScript frontend, a Python backend and PostgreSQL underneath, deployed on Azure. The hard part was splitting each project's hours by staff type. I went for a hybrid approach in which Gemini picks which profiles fit each project and then an optimisation algorithm allocates the hours as efficiently as possible, within each person's limits. The AI brings the judgement and the algorithm brings the precision.

A Next.js coordination app that nudges each person

An internal app to coordinate a team, built with Next.js, with frontend and backend in the same project, PostgreSQL as the database and deployed on Azure. Everyone has their place in the process, and the app sends them automatic reminders depending on the stage they are at, so nothing stalls waiting for someone.

    Project management with Power Apps

I have also worked with Microsoft's low-code tools. I built a project management app in Power Apps, with Power Automate automations behind it. When a company already lives in Microsoft 365, it is sometimes the fastest way to get its own tool and the easiest for its team to maintain.

What it gave me

  • Building a complete application from scratch, with frontend, backend and database
  • Combining AI with deterministic algorithms, where the AI decides and the algorithm optimises
  • Deploying and running applications on Azure with PostgreSQL
  • Choosing between code and low-code depending on who will maintain it
